Isometric training was largely popularised by Bob Hoffman and Dr John Zieglar following successful application to American Weightlifter, Bill March’s training regime in the 1960’s. Translated, Isometric means (iso) same (metric) length, and in it’s purest form consists of a static muscle action with no velocity component.

Bob Hoffman – Functional Isometric Contraction In many cases broken and re-broken by men who use the Functional Isometric Contraction System of training. Bob Hoffman followed this experiment by phone, by letter, by personal visit and encouraged Riecke to put his maximum effort back of the experiment. Isometrics was the brainchild of York Barbell Club owner Bob Hoffman and USA weight lifting team physician Dr. But when he got all caught up on steroids, that also socially discredited his inclusion of Isometrics too.

Strength can be defined as the muscles ability to exert force, and differs from power in that power is the amount of force expressed per unit of time. Strength provides the base for power production and is therefore a desirable athletic quality. The force exerted by the muscles is largely down to the number of motor units recruited and total time under maximum tension, with greater recruitment occurring at intensities above 85% of 1RM (1 functional iso lifting).

Traditional methods of improving maximum strength involve the maximum effort method, in which a load >90% is lifted for a low volume, traditionally 1-5 reps for 3-5 sets. However due to the velocity component of the maximal effort method, the total time spent under maximal tension is not optimal for motor unit recruitment. Research has shown isometric actions to recruit 5% more motor units (95.2%) than concentric (89.7%) and eccentric (88.3%) actions (Baubult, 2006). Therefore isometric training is a suitable method for increasing strength, with improvements occurring 15-20 degrees either side of the isometric angle position (Kurz, 2001)

Isometric Holds

Isometric holds require an athlete to hold a mechanically correct position for a prescribed duration. Use within novice athletes allows the athlete to learn the correct motor patterns. Isometric holds should be viewed as a pre-requisite to dynamic actions, for an athlete who is unable to hold a correct position will be unable to perform the movement dynamically. Isometric holds and dynamic movement can be combined so that the athlete emphasises the eccentric action, pausing at key positions for a prescribed duration. This technique can allow the athlete to learn correct recruitment patterns, gain kinesthetic feedback, and be subjected to a training effect through time under tension. Improvements in strength gains with this form of isometric training will be minimal at best, with application geared towards teaching technique in novice trainees.

This method involves a high yielding rate and high force magnitude, but short time under max tension. The athlete may perform this method through stepping off a relatively high box and sticking the landing in a position specific to the sport, and hold for a prescribed duration. This method can be used as an injury prevention technique aimed at force absorption, or as a method for teaching plyometric yielding, prior to incorporating an overcoming phase. The intensity of this technique is dependant on box height (0.3-1.0m) and should be monitored carefully.

Aimed at producing maximal force and recruiting the greatest amount of motor units possible, this method requires the to athlete to push of pull against an immovable object maximally for a duration of between 3-8s. This technique usually requires a power rack enabling the athlete to push or pull the bar against pins from various positions within the desired movement (short of lockout, mid-point, short of reversal). This method is extremely effective for strengthening specific ranges (sticking point) within lifts, which may be preventing the athlete from performing optimally. This method may also be applied to strengthening the end range of the movement, where the length tension relationship may prevent maximal force being applied and thus undertraining occurrs. In a sport specific context, isometric presses and holds may be applied to specific angles where strength is required, such as near full arm extension during a rugby hand off or a punch, or the jump position for a basketball player. The ability to maximally recruit the available motor units within these ranges would have a marked effect on power production from such positions.

Using loads between 120-150% of maximum concentric 1RM, the athlete, with the aid of a spotter, unracks the weight and holds it for a duration between 3-10s at various positions of the lift (spread over numerous sets). This method may not have as great recruitment capabilities as isometric pushes/pulls as the athlete is not attempting to push/pull the load, but merely support it, however this is a suitable option when a rack with pins is not available. During this technique, the athlete must concentrate on contracting the musculature maximally.

Developed by Dr John Ziegler and Bob Hoffman in 1962, FI training allows quantification and progression of isometric methods. The FI method also has a ballistic element, and may be more appropriate for developing starting strength. The FI method requires the athlete to unrack the weight from a specific height, enabling a 2-3 inch lift before holding the weight in position or driving the weight against pins. The weight is still held/driven at a specific angle, yet the preceding concentric lift allows the athlete to monitor progress. This method trains the athlete to overcome inertia and continue to produce maximal force.

Bob Hoffman Functional Isometrics

Due to the high level of motor unit recruitment associated with isometric training, their efficacy as a potentiation exercise is excellent. During such methods, the athlete may perform a set of isometrics (3-10s) choosing from either pushes/pulls/heavy supports/FI’s in order to maximally recruit motor units and excite the nervous system. The athlete must then rest long enough for fatigue to dissipate, though not so long that a potentiation effect is lost (2-3 minutes). Following a recovery period, the athlete can perform a power or submaximal strength set. Due to the elevation in neural drive lasting from the isometric activation set, the athlete will now be able to perform the power exercise at a higher power output, perform more repetitions at a given submaximal intensity, or perform the same number of repetitions at a greater intensity.

The application of these methods may also be warranted to performing an antagonist activation set, followed by a agonist strength power set, similar to methods used by coach Dan Baker of the Brisbrane Broncos who has performed extensive research in this field.

Activation

Isometric holds can be used as a method of teaching correct technique to begginners, or for activating the desired motor units within a warm up with all athletes. Within a strength/power block, isometrics can be incorporated prior to a power based exercise, as a means of neural activation (see Christian Thibaudeau, Theory and application of modern strength training methods.). The same organisation can be used to enhance force output during a strength set.

Isometrics can be incorporated in order to strengthen a particular range, either sport specific, or a sticking point. This can be done by combining isometrics and dynamic lifts within a workout, within a set, or within a repetition.

Isometrics can be used under fatigue during high volume training in order to promote a hypertrophy response. Within a hypertrophy context, isometrics may be incorporated at the end of a set, or last set to fully fatigue the muscles. With the aim of fatigue, the athlete should attempt to exert force during the isometric for the longest duration possible.

Often isometric exercises are touted as being for advanced trainees and unsuitable for begginners. My personal opinion is that this is incorrect. Of course impact absorption iso’s and iso holds can be very useful for teaching plyometric progression, injury prevention, and exercise technique, but it is the high force producing, longer duration methods, such as pulls/presses, heavy support, and FI’s that are in discussion. My belief is that providing a necessary anatomical adaptation phase has been completed, isometric exercises provide novice trainees with a very safe, and highly effective method of developing strength, and increasing their potential to maximally recruit motor units, a quality often lacking in the novice trainee. I take a different approach to my NPC guides than most guides. I look at how best to use certain NPC’s, typically in combat. While I will speak about their weaknesses, I don’t give them ratings or tell you which ones suck or which ones you shouldn’t play. Being flirtatious, backing him and his ideas up, and having his back, are the best ways to get his approval. He’s not very big on helping others. But he’s also not as dead set against helping others as someone like Lae’zel or Shadowheart.

Equipment Advice

Switch out his armour as fast as you can. He starts with padded armour that gives him disadvantage on stealth checks. This is definitely a big nope for any rogue.

Since he’s a high elf, he also can use a longbow instead of a shortbow. So switch to that when you can.

Astarion is really good for any kind of dexterity skill checks that need to be done. Especially if you give him a boost to 18 dexterity at level 4. He’s also excellent with perception. So he’s a good choice for scouting things out and for detecting things you’ll really otherwise want to notice.

As an elf he gets proficiency in perception, and coupled with the four skills he gets as a rogue, as well as the two provided by his background, he ends up having by far the most proficiencies of any of the current companions. It’s just a shame that his intelligence and charisma are low enough that you probably have a better option for skills like Deception, History, and Persuasion.

Combat

Rogues in 5th edition are pretty much best used as damage dealers. They hit creatures hard with a sneak attack and then often can move back out of harm’s way. They can also hit hard from range as well with their sneak attack.

Especially for tough fights, being hidden with him and surprising an enemy is not a bad idea. He’s going to have a pretty good chance of being the first on the initiative roll and (at least for the moment) you can often get a sneak attack on an enemy that starts any combat. So he can deal quite a bit of damage.

While normally I would say Rogues want to avoid staying in the melee range of an enemy at the end of their turn, so far the game seems to be pretty well balanced towards expecting these party members (and their limitations) to get used. Even with just 14 AC at the start, I found that Astarion works pretty well up close and can manage to survive a long period of time.

Fortunately, he doesn’t have to be up close. He also gets a pretty solid range option in the form of his ranged sneak attack. But, especially if you go with the Thief subclass, you are probably going to be better off attacking in melee when you can. With the Thief subclass he can have a main attack as well as two bonus action attacks.

Next to a fighter, rogues are probably the easiest class to play. Just use him to move around the battlefield by dashing and disengaging (jumping) as needed. Then work with the rest of your group to hit the biggest threat on the battlefield hard. This especially works well if someone else in your party can get the enemy he’s attacking prone, as that will give Astarion advantage on his attacks against them. Alternatively, Astarion can attack a creature from behind and gain advantage on his attacks that way as well.

You can also use his numerous attacks to try to take out weaker enemies quickly so that the group can focus on one big enemy. 5th edition’s action economy really favours numbers over pure power a lot of the time. So the less enemies you are facing the better off you’ll often be. Especially when you’ve got control spells available.

(Spoiler) As his story progresses he even gains a vampire bite that he can use as a bonus action attack. You can also bite a creature and not break stealth. The use of this ability is limited to once per short rest, though.

Level 2

No choices to be made at this level.

Level 3

Honestly, because of his poor intelligence, I can’t really recommend you take Arcane Trickster as his subclass. Thief is going to be a much better option, and it also comes with the really sweet benefit of being able to use two bonus actions. This could mean two bonus action attacks, having one be a jump, or even just using your bonus action for using a healing potion.

Level 4

Putting +1 to dexterity and +1 to constitution at level 4 is not a bad idea. This will give him more health, better dexterity and constitution saving throws, a bonus to his dexterity attacks, more damage, and a bonus to his dexterity skills.

Alternatively, taking the Mobile feat is an option. This can be good if you want him to be able to move around the battlefield. But honestly, he already has the ability to disengage as a bonus action by jumping. So opportunity attacks shouldn’t be a big threat.

If you want him to get a bit of spellcasting then the Magic Initiative: Cleric is an option. He’s not going to be a good spellcaster, but with 14 wisdom he’ll have a passable bonus. Healing Word or Shield of Faith are good 1st level options here because they only use up a bonus action and don’t heavily rely on your wisdom score.

An alternative to this is Magic Initiative: Warlock. This one is a bit out of left field, but getting the ability to cast Hex once per day could be really useful. In Baldur’s Gate 3, the spell seems to last either for an entire day or until you lose concentration. With it active it’ll let you deal out a ton more damage if you can avoid getting hit. Your charisma sucks though, so the cantrips you take for it are likely to not be very effective.

Also, while you might be tempted to take the Dual Wielder feat, don’t. It is a terrible feat whose benefits are less than just increasing your dexterity (increasing your dexterity would improve your AC and increase your chance to hit, damage, and skill bonuses). This was an issue in pen and paper as well. Just never take it.

Constructing this bibliography was different from my previous experiences with annotated bibliographies because of the types of texts I was consciously trying to locate. I was looking for foundation/historical texts, “how-to” texts, and texts with multiple approaches to rhetorical analysis. In order to locate these types of texts I first began with database searches in JSTOR and ProQuestCentral, and I then moved to search specific online journals (CCC, Rhetoric Review, RSQ). Using google scholar I looked up the texts that caught my interest in the databases and journals to see if and how often they were cited. If these texts were books I also look them up on Amazon.com to view their tables of contents.

This text is on the course syllabus, and since the professor commented that we would be silly not to use valuable sources on the reading list I consider this anchor text to have been located via word of mouth. My foundational text, Rhetorical Criticism (1965),by Edwin Black was first noticed when I was scanning bibliographies and saw that he was repeatedly cited. Using a cited reference search I established that Black’s text is the foundational text for rhetorical criticism in the field of rhetoric and composition. The more current, discussion texts such as “Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Rhetorical Criticism” were located through searching in bibliographies.

After completing my research I reviewed Geisler’s article and my research followed her recommended process. Also, most confusing aspect of this research was establishing the difference between rhetorical analysis and rhetorical criticism. To be sure, it is still unclear, to me, as to whether there is any concrete difference between the two terms; however, I feel confident about discussing the how various scholars have used these terms for their own purposes. Finally, the majority of texts on rhetorical criticism are written in the 1970s-80s and greatly taper off in the 1990s. There is the symposium on rhetorical criticism that appeared in Rhetoric Review in 2006, but there has been little discussion of rhetorical criticism since then.

These multidisciplinary approaches allow the reader to have a well-rounded understanding of how textual analysis can be conducted as well as an understanding that there are conflicts of opinion across various disciplines on how to conduct textual analysis. The volume includes a specific chapter delineating rhetorical analysis focusing specifically on the method of analysis as well as the process of production of texts. I site the introduction because I have not had a chance to look through the entire book; however, the introduction provided important information such as the type of language and vocabulary necessary to discuss and understand textual criticism. Specifically within the field of rhetorical and composition, rhetorical analysis and rhetorical criticism are one in the same. A rhetorical analysis of textual features of a text is a specific approach to rhetorical analysis as well as a type of textual analysis. I find it helpful to have these distinctions clearly marked. This book is quite useful in terms of providing a varied overview of textual analysis. This text was first located in the JSTOR database. I then searched the E-journal ProQuest Central for reviews and checked various online bibliographies that I often reference to see if it was sited.

deWinter’s markedly notes that the theorizing of rhetorical criticism has occurred most often with the field of speech communication. Her article is an effort to theorize and synthesize discussions about rhetorical criticism for the field of rhetoric and composition. deWinter focuses primarily on definitions, general methodology, and objects of rhetorical criticism. To that end, she differentiates between rhetorical criticism and rhetorical analysis. She also provides brief summaries of four textbooks on rhetorical criticism. Sonja Foss’s book (annotated here in this bibliography) is included in this short list. I chose this article because it is an excellent supplement to the symposium discussion on rhetorical criticism and methodology an issue of Rhetoric Review. Also, this is the only text that I have come across, in my limited and brief search that actually synthesizes rhetorical criticism for rhetoric and composition. Because of the nature of deWinter’s project, this article is a discussion text that bridges research in speech communication and rhetoric and composition. SpongeBob goes to Jellyfish Fields and sees Patrick as a Minotaur . He also goes to Bikini Bottom and Mr. Krabs was Scorpius. Once they were defeated, he headed to Neptune Valley. After Patrick unlocked the lock and gave SpongeBob Neptune's Trident, SpongeBob throws the Trident at Triton's sheild which destroys it and defeats Triton.

The packaging is pretty standard. Everything is neatly and safely placed and there are some accessories inside. These include a screwdriver, some cables, a cloth mask, a scraper, and a pair of gloves.

Preparation

The device comes fully assembled, so you just need to plug in the power cord.

The most important step before your first print would be to level the platform. To do so, click the ‘Tools’ button on the main menu.

Click ‘Move Z’.

And then rise the Z-axis by 10mm by clicking ‘10’ and then the button with an up-arrow.

Loosen the screws on the platform.

Place a thin (around 0.1 mm) piece of paper over the curing screen.

Click the ‘Home’ button in the ‘Move Z’ menu. Wait for the upper side of the machine to descent and stop automatically.

Apply slight pressure on the platform and then tighten the screws.

Go to the ‘Tools’ menu and click ‘Z = 0’ to save the position.

Take out the paper. The leveling process is finished.

Now’s the time for the exposure test. Click the ‘Detection’ in the ‘Tools’ menu. Choose the image and click ‘Next’.

Anycubic offers their own proprietary Photon Workshop slicing software, The recent update make the program much more useful and powerful, now the 80 MB will be sliced in a bit over 30 seconds instead of minutes.

Unfortunately, ChiTuBox — a very popular program to use with resin 3D printers — can’t yet be used with the Photon Zero due to the fact that the printer only works with the proprietary .pw0 file format.

The Mystical Ultimate Bundle Gen2 includes over 100 dynamic filters, any of which can be stacked and combined together to form an unlimited number of professional photo enhancements. Apply color toning, focal effects and lighting and discover how powerful this concept is when used in a dynamic environment. The Mystical Ultimate Bundle Gen2 fosters creative exploration and through the use of the Layers you can control the blending and effect stacking to further define the look you’re after. Each program in the suite is available under the Select AFX Effect menu. As you add them to your composition they appear on the Layer Palette letting you easily click to select them and control their blending and settings.

Where To Find It

- Download and click the file Mystical_Photo_Effects_Gen2_Setup_Adobe.exe.
- Under Microsoft User Account Control Dialog click YES.
- Check radio button ”I accept the agreement and click NEXT
- The location is set to C:Program Files (x86)Auto FX SoftwareMystical Gen2, just click NEXT and do not change the location. Allow to install to default.
- Check or Uncheck Create a desktop shortcut. This is a personal preference. Adding desktop shortcut is default. Click NEXT
- Click INSTALL
- Allow to Install and click finish. The app will launch.
When Installed you need to obtain your activation code. Your activation code is emailed to you and allows you full support through custservice@autofx.com for the duration of the product, as long as it is supported. Support ends when a newer upgrade is avail in the future. You will be eligible for future upgrades at a discounted price after you complete your activation. Once you receive your activation code you will place it in the slot and activate your entire product. Your product starts off in demo mode with a 15 day trial. When you activate your product you remove trial mode and all functionality is available perpetually. Updates are avail for the product from time to time free of charge.
